Apostrophes are often used to denote possession.

For example:

The gentleman's son stays in the US.

My daughter's summer holidays have started.

Hitesh's birthday is on April 27.

Apostrophes can also act as a contraction.

For example:

I am = I'm

I will = I'll

It is = It's

Take this quiz to see how well you know your apostrophes.
