There is something magical about the sari.

It can make the woman wearing it feel like a star.

Which is why the southern superstar, Savitri, loved her saris.

It is this iconic actress from whom Gaurang draws inspiration for his latest collection.

The ace designer had created the costumes for Mahanati, the tri-lingual biopic about the actress.

Savitri, who was lovingly titled Mahanati, meaning pride of actresses, was beloved in the four southern film industries -- Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

Gaurang brought in 100 artisans who worked tirelessly for over 18 months, weaving amazing textiles for the film.

He used a wide variety of fabrics, including Mangalgiri and Kota.

Luxurious brocades, silks, organzas, hand woven satins and chiffons also came together to create Savitri’s golden era.

The collection also included swirling anarkalis, full flared kurtas and flowing shararas.

There were saris in every shade and hue, with sensational weaves and gorgeous motifs.

Adding drama to the show was the graceful ballet dancer, Pia Sutaria, who pirouetted down the ramp to the foot-tapping Mud mud ke na dekh from Shree 420.
