First look: Indian-born designer dresses Michelle Obama
November 26, 2009

On November 24, US President Barack Obama [Images] hosted a state dinner at the White House to honour our Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh [Images]. And while political analysts are tracking the official visit and what it means for Indo-US relations, fashionistas are in a tizzy over what Michelle Obama [Images] wore to mark the occasion.

Appropriately enough, the First Lady chose a creation by Indian-born designer Naeem Khan, who is also known to have worked with such big names as Jennifer Lopez [Images] and Beyonce Knowles [Images].

The strapless evening gown was entirely hand-stitched, featuring sterling silver detailing against a champagne gold background. In fact, the embroidery work was completed in India [Images] and then sent across to Khan's studio in the US.

The designer got 40 people in total to spend more than four weeks working on the dress and did not even meet the First Lady for a fitting -- her measurements were sent across and his team ensured that they got it just right. What is more, the statuesque First Lady accessorised with Indian-style bangles to set off her outfit, scoring full marks for her elegant appearance at the state dinner.
