This is the most important tip of all -- I cannot stress it enough. Do not try to colour your hair yourself. There is a reason why professionals train for years before working on people's hair. And it's not like a stylist can wave a magic wand and undo damage you may inadvertently cause to your mane!
I've seen so many do-it-yourself kits go horribly wrong with people -- either the colour doesn't catch on at all, or the bleach beforehand burns off a portion of the hair, or then the colour doesn't match up to the one advertised because it's been used on already treated hair. I've had people come to me with patchy jobs because they couldn't reach the back of their heads to apply effectively, or then with a hideous colour that came on with mixing and matching.
It's just not worth the risk -- pay a little more and leave it to a professional to give you exactly what you want. If you mess up at home, don't try to fix it yourself either. It's a more painstaking and expensive process correcting a job gone wrong.
