The Layoff Tales: 'No choice but to settle for a lower salary'

April 16, 2009
We asked Get Ahead readers to send their layoff tales and we are getting mails from employees belonging to different sectors of the Indian economy.

In the 32nd part of this series IT executive Rahul Bose* who switched careers from the hotel industry tells the story of how he was sacked.

Name: Rahul Bose (*name changed on request)
Company/Sector: Hotel industry, then switched to IT
Work experience: 5 years

Background:

I am from Bangalore and was working in an MNC for the last five years. I was originally from the hotel industry, but got into the IT field for a 60 percent hike in salary. My company was pleased with my performance; I was promoted and able to secure a good reputation for myself in the organisation.

How I lost my job:

Life was going well and I got married also in between, but then the recession happened. Company clients began cost-cutting and in 2008, our organisation shut down. Another contractor offered to take on all of us old employees, but they wanted us on board for much lower salaries than we had been working for.

Job hunt:

I hunted for a job for about two months, but to no avail. There was no opening anywhere and I had comitted to a large loan amount that I had to repay. So finally, I accepted the new contract like several of my ex colleagues and began working for a much smaller amount of money.

We're made to work under junior people there and they control us as they see fit -- we're pushed to obey them, because we don't have any choice. We all fondly remember the old days when we used to work independently and achieved targets together -- it's what helps us get through these hard days and months.

My position is not secure -- but finally, with God's grace, my wife was able to procure a government job, so at least one person in our family is financially secure.
