The Layoff Tales: 'It was disheartening, but I'm still confident'

April 7, 2009
We asked Get Ahead readers to send their layoff tales and we are getting mails from employees belonging to different sectors of the Indian economy.

In the 26th part of this series, Sunitha Nannapaneni tells how when her company lost clients, she lost her job.

Name: Sunitha Nannapaneni
Age: 24
Company/Sector: IT consulting
Work experience: 3 years

Background:

After completion of my MCA, I joined a startup company in Hyderabad as a trainee consultant. They trained me on SAP (software applications) ABAP (advanced business application programming) for 3 months and after that, placed me on their offshore projects. I earned a good reputation from all the projects I worked on and there were always emails of appreciation from clients.

How I lost my job:

In the month of January, I was posted in Pune working on a client's project, along with eight other consultants. The next two months saw my company lose a couple of big clients, who accounted for 60 percent of our business. I got to know from my earlier project manager that the management was looking at cutting down on cost and the first option was laying off some of the consultants. Since I was still in Pune working on a project for a client, I thought my position was secured.

But I was proved wrong. Due to budget reasons, our Pune client has cut down the resources from eight to three and I was one of those who were asked to return to Hyderabad. The very next day at the office, I was asked to put in my papers and the reason mentioned was cost-cutting. I was told that for any future requirement I would be given preference -- later, I understood that they said the same thing to everyone who was laid off.

Further action:

Though it was disheartening to be laid off, I am still confident that my good work in the past three years will definitely get me a job. I am utilising this time to create blogs outlining my work experience and getting them published on SAP sites like SDN and SAPTechnical.com. I am also actively participating in the SDN forums. As and when my blogs are published, I will updating my profile with them -- I'm sure that this will add value to my profile. I am also getting touch with the Indian customers with whom I have worked earlier (just in case, they have any requirement for an in-house consultant).
