'I love Navratri, it's definitely my favourite festival'
September 30, 2008
Perhaps, yes, Nandini does represent the change in India we've heard so much about. But she has another story to tell, too. It's a story about the perseverance of culture, tradition and heritage in the face of modernity, in the face of that very same change she embodies.
Nandini eats her chicken burger not out of defiance, or of any desire to ape Western consumerist society. She's eating it because, after hours of non-stop dancing, she's really hungry.
Navratri tunes on your mobile!
And no, she wasn't out dancing with male classmates on the sly -- she was with her family. Instead of the tight-fitting jeans and tee-shirts that doubtless occupy her closet, tonight she's decked out in full, classical Navratri regalia, with pinks and purples, maroons and greens and shimmering sequins, the same outfit her grandmother might have worn 50 years ago.
"I love Navratri. It's definitely my favourite festival," Nandini says, looking most unembarrassed and quite natural with her mobile in one hand, chicken burger in the other and wearing a traditional costume. "It's really special in our family," she says and gestures towards her parents and sisters, who are similarly dressed and all smiles, waiting for Nandini to scarf down her snack.
