Skipping the Rohtang Pass

Almost everybody wants to see the Rohtang Pass, gateway to the Lahaul-Spiti valleys, with picturesque views of the Himalayan Range, glaciers and rivers. The pass is usually open between June and September. We were fortunate to be there during that time, but because of the heavy traffic to Rohtang we decided to visit the Solang Valley instead.

About 13 km from Manali, the Solang Valley offers spectacular views of the snow-capped mountains and is a popular destination for adventure winter sports like paragliding, skiing and ball rolling (a weird adventure, in which one rolls over the slopes after being tucked inside a ball). However, a cup of hot Maggi noodles and special tea can be relished throughout the year at the end of it here.

On our way back from Solang, our guide took us to the home of a local family he knew in Burua village.
