CAT 2007: Your post-CAT plan of action

So you have taken the CAT, now what? Can you expect a call from the IIMs? Should you apply to other B-schools? Is your percentile good enough to get you into the country's best institutes? Gejo Srinivasan discussed these and other queries with GA readers on November 19.

For those of you who missed the chat, here's the transcript.

Gejo Sreenivasan says, Hello, this is Gejo here. Good Afternoon!

sakshi asked, hi ,what percentile does mica look at ? wat is my score in english is low ?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, MICA looks at around 90 to 92 percentile and for CAT 2007 the score will range between 80 to 85 overall. MICA is known to look at the Verbal Score and you should get at least a 75 percentile in VA section.

lateentry asked, i have scored 25 in quant 30 in di and 46 in verbal also have 2 yrs work ex .. will i get atleast one call?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, You can definitely expect at least 1 call from the IIM. I would suggest that you apply to some good Non-IIM institute as back up. Since you have 2 years experience, you may even consider GMAT as an option. Given the fact that you have done well in the CAT, chances are, you will do well in GMAT and look at lot of good schools.

Vivek asked, I have a score of about VA-43,DI-34 and Quant-23. From which all institues can i expect a call...will i recieve an iim call????

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, You have safely cleared the VA & DI cut-off. However the Quant is a touch & go. You can expect calls from at least 1. Do apply to some non-IIM schools as back up (just in case).

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Focus now on the other tests. CAT is not the end of the road. Especially look at XAT. You have the whole of dec with you for prep.

shivit asked, hi gejo, i am getting VA - 34, DI - 41 & QA - 18. What are my chances? In which colleges should i apply?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, ur overall percentile would be 96+. look at TAPMI, MDI, BIM, SP Jain

vs asked, di: 30 qa: 16 va: 22-28 total: 68-74 i am frm sc category..with 2 yrs wrk ex and gud acads..and gud grad engg college..i knw iima. iimc is out. do i have a chance of other iim calls

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, ur percentile will be around 80 to 85.. it is touch and go. my take is that u will still manage at least a call.

deepak asked, i am getting 28 in quant ,43 in di and 29 in english what are my chances?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Overall score of 100-- Good score.. 98+ percentile. You are in the cut-off borderline in Quant & VA.. You should get calls.. keep some back-ups.. apply to good non-IIM institutes

sam1234.07sam asked, i am getting 34 in quant, 46 in di and 36 in english. will i get calls from IIM's.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Sure. I suggest that you start your GD/PI prep since some of the IIMs do not give much time between the call announcements & GD/PI date.

nikhil asked, I was able to crack DI and Quant.. verbal was not that good.. what are my chances?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, It will depend on your score in Verbal. The IIMs are usually strict about VA. Do send me the score.

vaibhs82 asked, Hi Gejo, i have got 95 in all, VA-12,QA-25 and DI-58. what percentile should i expect and what non-IIM colleges shud i apply to considering tht my VA score is pretty bad.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Your overall percentile should be around 97. The specific VA cut-offs for non-IIM institute is difficult to predict and therefore I suggest that you spread your risks and apply to at least 4 schools. some of them could be TAPMI, SP Jain, MDI, BIM.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Your overall percentile will be around 80 to 84 percentile.. the schools that you can look at are IISWBM, IMDR, Praxis, IIFM.. may be UBS , FORe

Rupesh asked, Hi Gejo Getting as per MBA Guru, 14 in QA, 48 in DI, 56 in Eng Total 118 Have 3.5 Yrs Work Ex & decent schooling results. Any chance of getting IIM Calls

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Your overall percentile will be around 99 percentile which will be good enough for the IIMs, the only worry is your quant score. Since you have a decent profile, there are chances of getting calls from IIMs. I would strongly recommend that you focus on XAT (XLRI is among top 5) and also look at GMAT as an option (given your work exp and score). You may apply to some non-IIM institute as back up.

vaibhs82 asked, also i forgot to mention tht i have 2.5 yrs exp in IT industry. CAT score is 95: VA-12,DI-58 and QA-25 wht shud i expect and which non-iim colleges to apply for

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, 1. SP Jain, MDI 2. Look at GMAT. with your exp you could look at schools like Case Western(with aid), Katz, Nanyang, Boston, Univ of California, Tepper etc. There are lot of options. In case things do not work out with CAT you have a lot of options with GMAT.

MAYUR asked, i am getting 12 in eng,8 in di and 10 in maths,tot-30 so which institute forms do i prefer to fill up as the last date is nov 30

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Since yur percentile will be around 50 to 60, it would be difficult to get in to the top 40 B-Schools. You must wait till the CAT scorecard is out and then apply.. Focus on other tests now..

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, It is unfortunate that your score in VA is low else you would easily received calls.. But then you never know.. If you have a good profile some IIMs should give you a call..

vivek_chem2k asked, Sir, I have 3.5 yrs of work exp in production.I'm B.TECH (CHEMICAL) from HBTI .My score in CAT 07 is QA= 15,DI=58,QA=10. What are my chaces of getting a call from TAPMI,SPJain NIRMA ? Which institutes will i get a call from?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Your overall percentile will be around 92. You have a good chance of getting a call from all the institutes that you have mentioned. Since you have more than 3.5 years of experience, you could definitely look at GMAT as an option. This will help you create options that could be even better that what you have in hand.. With ur profile, some of the global b-school that you can look at are.. purdue, tepper, maryland, CEIBS, NUS, McGill etc.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, QA & DI - safe. VA is in the border. Touch & Go.

gaurav86goyal asked, hello gejo, i am scoring 34 in quant, 46 di and 19 verbal. 10 and 12th marks above 90. any chance for any iim call??

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Your verbal score is low and therefore I think it would be difficult to get a call from the IIMs. There is chance if your profile is good. Your 10th & 12th marks is fantastic. and if it had continued through in your grad/post grad there is a chance.

manoj asked, Hi Gejo. I m getting QA26, DI58, VA 40. I am 2.5 years experinced in Software indestry and from very reputed Eng college, what are my chances ?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Pretty good. You should get at least 1 to 2 calls.

Siddharth asked, Hi Gejo. I am getting a score of around 89 with around 63% accuracy. I have 2+ years of experience. Can you please tell which institutes I should apply to?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Your percentile will be around 93 to 95. SPJain, IMT, BIM, Praxis are the schools that would give calls at that percentile. MDI could be a touch & go.

mayank_236 asked, I am getting a score of 76. QA score of 10, others are pretty good. I have more than 4 years of work experience and not keen on giving GMAT. Please suggest the good colleges I should look out for

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Your percentile will be around 86 to 89. and some of the schools that give calls at that percentile are TAPMI, UBS, KJ Somaiya, Praxis, IMDR, Welingkar, Great Lakes etc. You must take an informed decision since you have 4+ yrs exp. I appreciate that you have reasons for not looking at the GMAT option. However, I would still suggest the same since you have schools like ISB, PGP-EX(IIMC), XLRI( 1 year program), Great Lakes etc. in Indian context.

manoj asked, Hi Gejo. I'm getting QA26, DI58, VA 40. I am 2.5 years experinced in Software indestry and from very reputed Eng college, what are my chances ?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, manoj.. You have done really well in CAT.. your chances are pretty high. you should get calls.

Himanshu asked, i am expecting 57 in CAT, What colleges should i look at?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, 57 will fetch you a percentile of around of around 75 and some of the schools that give calls at that percentile are ITM, BIMTECH, KIRLOSKAR, AMRITA, IFMR, SDM-IMD, NIBM-Pune.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Your percentile will be around 88. NITIE will be difficult. some of the schools at that scores - TAPMI, UBS, KJ Somaiya etc.

jaded asked, I have 31 in quant 42 in di and 32 in english overall 105 with 4 years work ex what are my chances . have 610 in GMAT what do you suggest

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Given your score you should get calls from IIMs. IIMs would be a better option than the ones that you would probably get at a GMAT score of 610. I would suggest that you go ahead and apply to schools through GMAT since it can act as a strong back-up.

ajit asked, qa 25, va 37, di 38..total 100. no work-ex, 90%+ in 10 and 12 standards. 74% in engg. can I expect a couple of calls from the smaller IIMs?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Yes, given your current score, I think you would be looking at a percentile of around 98. In this case, you should expect a call from one of the IIMs atleast. I think you should also apply to a few of the other Non IIM B-Schools.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, You should be looking at a percentile of around 99, with a pretty decent chance of getting atleast 3 calls from the IIMs

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, A call from IIM would be difficult. But you can definitely expect a call from SPJain.

ttt asked, va 33 di 42 qa 37, IIM calls?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, 112 seems to be a decent enough score to get atleast 1 - 2 calls from the IIMs.

nitins asked, Hi sir .scores are 36 in MATHS & DI AND 18 IN ENGLISH ..WAT TO DO..I HVE 2YRS WORK EX..

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, at a score of 90, you are expecting a percentile of around 95. Considering this percentile, you can expect calls from IMt, BIM, IMI and be hopeful that MDI, NITIE(only for engineers) also give you a call.

NervousWreck asked, Hi Gejo, well my quant/DI/English break as per 2 out of the 3 leading MBA coaching websites is 26/46/28 total 100. according to the third my total drops to 95 with 23 in English. What can I expect?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Look at the IMS answer key, if your scores are around 100, then you can expect atleast 1 call from the IIMs, if your score is around 95, expect calls from atleast MDI and NITIE.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, You have a very high score, but the problem is that you ahve not done all that well in English. So, maybe you can be hopeful of a call from the IIMs. But you can expect calls from MDI, NITIE, IMT

DL asked, Mr Gejo, My scores as per answers provided by different institutes are :- QA-41, DI- 50, EU-varying from 32(IMS) to 39(CL). I've good academic record, B.Tech.(Chemical Engg.) from IIT-D and a work experience of 2 years. Can I expect calls from IIM A/B/C?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Looking at your overall scores and the healthy distribution across sections you can hope to get calls from the top 3 IIMs.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, See you have a high Verbal Score, For getting a call from MICA, you would need a percentile close to 92, which in this test would mean a score of 80 - 85. Still, I believe you should go ahead and apply to MICA

reshmi asked, Sir, I am studying in 11th class with commerce. want to be an MBA. But financially i am from a poor family. My mummy helping me to study. I scored 84.4% at Metric(CBSE) . can you tell me, could i get financial help from any institutes for studying further.? reshmi

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Reshmi, Most of the premiere B-Schools have tie-up with banks which offer loans to students for studies. Apart from that these top Institutes also have meritorious student support program. For further querries, mention all your details and write to ims@imsindia.com

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, You are looking at a percentile between 80 to 85. You can think about applying to IISWBM, WELINGKAR, IMDR, PRAXIS, IIFM, GREAT LAKES

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Despite your very high score, you still have scored very low in Verbal, so I dont think you have a chance of getting calls from IIMs.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, IIM says that SC candidates should score atleast 17% in each section. You are on the borderline, but still considering your decent scores in the other two sections, you might stand a chance to get calls from the IIMs

sriv asked, how is IIPM,mumbai?how r d placements?i m getting 64 in CAT.can i expect better than IIPM.also how is ICFAI whose exam is next month?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, A score of 64 would be around 80 - 85 percentile. Instead of IIPM you can look at the following institutes. IISWBM, WELINGKAR, IMDR, PRAXIS, IIFM, GREAT LAKES

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Your verbal scor is on the lower side, So, you can just keep your fingers crossed for an IIM Call.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, At a score of 60, you are looking at a percentile of 70 - 79. You can expect a call from BIMTech, But what I would suggest is if this is your first try at the test, you can look at writing the test again or maybe look at GMAT as a career. Gejo Sreenivasan answers, Your score is 90. I think an IIM call is going to be difficult, You should keep your fingers crossed for calls from MDI/SPJain, But considering your work experience, I would suggest you look look at MBA from BSchools abroad as an option also.

max asked, Sir,My score is QA:24 DI:39 VA:35 .Total 98. 10th- 85%, 12th 88% (Commerce) ,Graduation 78% (Mass Media). No Work Ex. What is the probability of an IIM call.Also what about MDI? And does it make sense to apply to IMI besides IMT,MICA,Sp JAin. How would you rate the college?

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, At 98, you can hope for a call from atleast 1 IIM. I think you should look at MICA, MDI, SPJAIN and because of a bachelor's in media expect a call from MICA. Applying to IMI as a worst case scenario backup option is alright.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, At the score you are looking a percentile in between 90 - 92. At the percentile you can think about applying to the following institutes. S.P. JAIN, MICA, NIRMA, IMT-Nagpur, MDI-HR, IMI-HR

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, AT 96, you have a pretty decent score and another very nice institute that you have forgotten is MDI.

Gejo Sreenivasan answers, AT 96, you have a pretty decent score and another very nice institute that you have forgotten is MDI.
