Kids are smart
The biggest perk for Ankur is that he likes children. But getting them to pose for the camera is a challenge. "Kids are smart. They will not respond to pretentiousness or stupidity. You have to be open and honest with them. And yes, patience. You need lots of it, " he says.
Ankur elaborates, "A naughty, difficult child is easier to handle. A silent one needs time and attention. He needs to be cajoled. I spend time and make the effort to win his/her trust. With infants I have to wait long hours to capture the right moment. For kids between five or six months of age, I use non-verbal communication and toys to divert their attention and make them familiar. With a one-year-old you can use language. But for all ages a smile and eye contact always works. It helps the child trust you."
Giving an essential lesson in child psychology Ankur says, "Children have to be treated as adults. You have to take them seriously. If you try and act like them they are going to look at you in a funny way and you will never be able to relate to them."
Besides photographing baby portfolios, Ankur has also made a niche for himself in the world of print advertising. He says, "The ad world is beginning to prefer specialised professional and that's a big change when compared to the situation four years back." Corporate assignments are also coming his way. "Corporate houses need photographs of children to add to the ambience of their work environment," he explains.
