The right shades

Paint one wall a different colour from the rest of the room. Ashwini Chaphekar, a Mumbai-based interior designer, recommends bright colours that create a feeling of warmth. Lime green or lemon yellow can work like a ray of sunshine.

It should be a colour that flows with the rest of the room though, and one you can come home to. Make sure you actually see the shade before choosing it, as things may look different on a computer monitor or shade card.

You can get one wall painted with quality paint from a good brand for Rs 500 inclusive of labour charges. Of course, you need to haggle.

Have fun with greens

Plants are an excellent way to bring a bit of nature into your home. Decide if you want your garden to be scented with lilies or lush with ferns. If you lack the green thumb, opt for a Zen rock garden instead. Sand, stones and water are used to create a garden that is hassle-free, yet appealing to the eye and soothing to the senses.
