Singin' In The Rain (1952)
One American musical that consistently ranks among the ten best movies ever made, it is also an affectionately funny insider spoof about the film industry's uneasy transition from silent pictures to the talkies.
The musical tells the story of debonair silent movie star Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly), at the pinnacle of silent movie stardom. But as studios scramble to change from silent films to talkies, he has to do something to save his career and that of costar Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen), who has a screechy voice hilariously ill-suited to the new technology and her glamorous screen image.
Musical highlights of this film, which was made entirely on the MGM lot, include the knockout Make 'em laugh; the big Broadway melody production number and, of course, that charming title number where Kelly, umbrella in hand, gleefully dances and sings in the rain.
