Charles launches The Rising

Ketan Mehta could not have launched his film with greater fanfare.

During his visit to India, Prince Charles decided to drop in on a Bollywood set. He chose Mehta's The Rising, starring Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji and Toby Stephens. Charles sounded the clapperboard at the film's mahurat.

The Rising is about the Indian soldier Mangal Pandey (played by Khan) who sparked off the 1857 revolt against the East India Company. Stephens plays his British friend, Captain William Gordon. Mukerji may play a nautch girl and British actress Coral Beed will play the female lead opposite Khan.

A bilingual, the Hindi version will be called Mangal Pandey.

As we told you yesterday, Aishwarya Rai dropped out of The Rising, saying the remuneration offered her was not enough. Her loss was Amisha Patel's gain. Patel plays the romantic interest opposite Stephens, son of the legendary British actress Maggie Smith (seen most recently in India as Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films).
