Quintessential celebrity

If you are Aishwarya Rai, you make news all year around:
• The actress turned producer this year in partnership with brother Aditya and friend Shabbir Boxwalla. Dil Ka Rishta, co-starring Arjun Rampal and Priyanshu Chatterjee, flopped, not that it made any difference in Ash's popularity.
• She busily collected Best Actress trophies at every award event worth its name for her portrayal of Paro in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas.
• Gurinder Chadha signed her on for Bride And Prejudice, a contemporary adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice.
• Ash became the first Indian actress to become a jury member at the Cannes film festival.
• Director Coline Serreau signed her for Chaos, co-starring Ash's favourite actress Meryl Streep.

Ash had her share of downers as well:
• Her garish wardrobe and elaborate hairdos at Cannes earned her flak.
• An accident on the sets of Rajkumar Santoshi's Khakee in Nashik resulted in an ankle fracture and abrasions. In hospital, she issued a statement saying she would never work with former boyfriend Salman Khan.
• Ash walked out of Ketan Mehta's The Rising, starring Aamir Khan, when producer Bobby Bedi refused to pay her the demanded remuneration.
