Raj Kumar Santoshi This is great news. I saw the film in the theatre and enjoyed every bit of it along with the crowd. Aamir has made the film industry proud. The whole unit deserves this nomination.

Mahesh Bhatt I hope we realise that the Academy Awards, like most awards, are also political and can be negotiated, although many deserving people have won it. To me, the whole concept of awards is silly because if they decide who deserves it, they also have the right to decide who does not deserve it. Frankly, who cares about a 13.5-inch statuette which weighs three-and-a-half kilos and costs $100? I think the opinion of a tongawallah is more important than that of an ageing Academy member. I wasn't surprised when I heard Lagaan got nominated. The global focus seems to be on Southeast Asia, especially India, and America is not naïve to ignore it. I know Aamir lobbied for Lagaan but that is the way it is done there. If you are in the race, you might as well race the opponent out. After the September 11 attacks in the US, Asia has been under the keen eye of the Americans. You might recall that Aamir had recently visited Afghanistan and given them a print of Lagaan. What do you think of that?

Suchitra Krishnamoorthy (wife of director Shekhar Kapur) It is fantastic news. Aamir Khan and his marketing team really saw to it that everyone watched the film, which is very important. They planted themselves in Los Angeles and created an interest. Usually, Hindi films are not popular because the Americans know so little about us. I remember telling Ashutosh that he should shorten it but he refused, saying that it was his film and that was how he wanted it. The Oscar nomination has made India proud.

Baba Azmi I have no words to express what I am feeling. More than a colleague, Aamir is a very dear friend. So this is excellent news. It is a very big honour to be nominated for the Oscars. The whole team deserves a huge pat.

Nandita Puri I have seen Amelie, the other contender for the Best Foreign Language Film. It was sweet and nothing more. Lagaan offered a lot more. I think Lagaan should win Best Film because it was wonderful in every aspect, lacking in nothing. The length of the film may go against it, but that's all. We are very proud. Unfortunately, I have seen a lot of lobbying during [husband]Om's City of Joy and East is East. In the end, they tend to settle for their ownfilms. But my fingers are crossed.

I'm so happy for all of them. My son Sohail gave me the news; he was also excited about it. This is a well deserved nomination. Aamir and Ashutosh's hard work has paid off. It was quite a bold step to do this film.Even I would have been sceptical if the script had been offered to me because there is no precedent film to check whether this would work.

A amir is an old and dear friend of mine. We worked together in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander. I am so happy that such a well-made film made it to the Oscar nominees. It proves that dedication, passion, professionalism and hard work do pay off and Aamir has all these in abundance.
