Russell Crowe is Best actor

Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan came on live from Australia to accept his first Oscar award for his song, Things have changed from The Wonder Boys.

Russell Crowe won the Best Actor in a leading role as the Roman general-turned-slave-turned Gladiator.

Crowe, who happens to be the cousin of New Zealand cricketers, Jeff and Martin Crowe, thanked the Academy, his mom and dad, "who I just can't thank enough."

His parting words: "To anybody who's on the downside of advantage, it's possible."
