A rich Thakur's wife is lonely, bored and longs for her husband's attention. The Thakur, for his part, wants nothing to do with his wife, and everything with alcohol and courtesans.

Tragedy queen Meena Kumari at her bewitching, melancholic best, in her role of the Chhoti Bahu. Guru Dutt's poignant and sensitive directorial eye is an apt showcase for the decadence and grandeur of the zamindari era.
