Changing horses in mid-course did not prove dangerous for the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister. Kalyan Singh, who had rejoined the BJP in February after forming the breakaway Rashtriya Kranti Party, defeated Badrul Islam of the Rashtriya Lok Dal with 2,58,284 votes.
