Constituency: Mumbai North Central
The most unlikley winner in the victory lap of the Congress in Mumbai was Eknath Gaikwad who won against Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi by a margin of 8,615 votes. It was a straight fight between the Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance and the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party-Republican Party of India.
It was said that the Congress had fielded a political lightweight in Minister of State for Health Eknath Gaikwad. Joshi had won this seat in 1999 by a margin of 1.69 lakh votes. It has traditionally been a Congress constituency.
