The Sleeper
In this ingenious approach, the politician tries to convey the impression of working day and night for his voters, without wasting time on sleep. As soon as he is put on a platform at a public function, he never fails to nod off to sleep, no matter how uncomfortable the chair he is given.
When it is time for him to make his speech, he wakes up with a startled smile, shakes his head to clear it and jumps right into an impassioned speech. He always manages to work into its text a few lines about how his family/supporters/secretary/party leader often wonders how he manages to cram so much work into his day.
He goes on to explain, with a long-suffering expression, that he has learnt how to manage with very little sleep. R Gundu Rao of the Congress -- once Karnataka chief minister -- and H D Deve Gowda -- once Karnataka chief minister and once prime minister -- could carry this off with ease.
