'Congress wrote off Heptullah two years ago'

The Congress on Tuesday said it did not consider senior leader Najma Heptullah a part of it.

"As and when necessary, it [the party] will take action [against Heptullah], but it is irrelevant. Why are you worried," party leader Kapil Sibal said in New Delhi.

He also denied that party president Sonia Gandhi had humiliated her.

The Congress wrote her off when she received an award from Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief K S Sudershan two years ago, he said.

He asked if nominating Heptullah for 24 years to the Rajya Sabha and helping her become the deputy chairperson of the House was a humiliation

She wanted a commitment from the party for a fifth term in the Rajya Sabha and nobody could be given such a guarantee, he said.

Earlier, party spokesperson Anand Sharma described Heptullah's criticism of Gandhi as "unwarranted and unfortunate".
