Firing by Pakistani troops on Monday night forced the Election Commission to shift some polling booths in three border villages to Samba town.
The villages are Galar, Pen and Fakirachaka in Jammu district. The three villages are within striking range of Pakistani artillery, DSP Ashok Sharma told rediff.com.
The polling booths have now been shifted to the Jammu and Kashmir Industrial Development Corporation complex in Samba town, where people have turned up to cast their votes.
So far, polling has been peaceful, Sharma said.
As the decision was taken late on Monday night, the booths were shifted only on Tuesday morning.
Consequently, polling could not begin on time as the Electronic Voting machines reached an hour after the scheduled time for commencement of polling.
Samba is a reserved seat. The main contestants are Som Nath (National Conference), Swarn Lata (Congress) and Som Nath (Bahujan Samaj Party).
