The Congress and the People's Democratic Party on Saturday struck a deal on government formation in Jammu and Kashmir with the Congress conceding the chief minister's post to the PDP for the first term.
The two parties will share the chief minister's post on a rotational basis. They have also agreed on a common minimum programme.
Speaking to reporters at her residence in New Delhi after posing for pictures with the Mufti, Congress president Sonia Gandhi said: "In the larger interest of Jammu and Kashmir the Congress has decided to let Muftisaab become the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir."
Earlier, it became clear that the two parties were close to clinching a deal when senior leaders of the Panthers Party and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) were invited to join the Sonia-Mufti meeting.
Both the Panthers Party and the CPI-M are likely to be a part of the emerging coalition government in Srinagar.
