Tarigami-led group has no preferences
on chief ministership

Election 2002 Ahead of the talks between leaders of the Congress and People's Democratic Party, head of the seven-member People's Democratic Forum, Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami, on Friday said his group has no preferences on the issue of chief ministership.

"People's mandate is for a coalition and inter-regional harmony," Tarigami, whose group will play a crucial role in government formation, said.

"Our only emphasis is on providing good governance and a healing touch to the people."

"The issue of chief ministership is for the Congress and PDP to decide," Tarigami said.

He, however, was open to the idea of rotational chief ministership, a proposal mooted by the Congress.

Tarigami is holding talks with Congress leaders on a common minimum programme. He has met All India Congress Committee general secretary Ambika Soni and is scheduled to meet Arjun Singh and Manmohan Singh on Friday.
