PM calls Farooq, asks him to continue
as caretaker CM

Election 2002 Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Thursday spoke to Farooq Abdullah and asked him to continue as caretaker chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

Abdullah had informed Governor Girish Chandra Saxena that he had no "moral right" to continue as caretaker CM.

Sources close to Abdullah said minutes after he made the announcement, Vajpayee telephoned him and asked him to continue.

Abdullah told the prime minister that he had acted as per his moral conscience and was awaiting a response from the governor, the sources said.

They said Abdullah informed Vajpayee that he would act in the interests of the people and the country.

After Abdullah had submitted his resignation on October 12, the governor had asked him to continue as caretaker chief minister till the new government was formed or till October 17, whichever was earlier.

The term of the previous assembly ends on Thursday.
