Congress, PDP decide to continue talks

Election 2002 Onkar Singh in Srinagar

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Ghulam Nabi Azad met People's Democratic Party chief Mufti Mohammed Sayeed on Wednesday in an effort to reach a consensus on the issue of government formation in the state.

It was decided that when Azad calls on Governor G C Saxena, he will not stake claim to form the government.

"I met Mufti saheb for fifteen minutes and decided that we should tell the governor that the two parties are still together and they need more time to sort out matters relating to formation of a new government. Hence, I will not stake claim to form the government when I call on the governor," Azad said at Broadway Hotel in Srinagar.

"We still have time until tomorrow evening. We will have meetings later in the day to sort out our differences," he added.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India-Marxist veteran Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami met the governor and held discussions with him. He is part of the People's Democratic Forum -- a group of seven legislators.

He told journalists that the PDF had not given any letter of support to the Congress.

However, Congress leader from Jammu Mangat Ram Sharma told rediff.com that the party, which won 20 seats in the election, had the support of 21 legislators.

"We have to take a broader view of the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir. Only the person who can take care of all the three regions of the state, namely Kashmir, Jammu and Ladakh, should become the chief minister... Jammu is also suffering from terrorism," he said.
