Onkar Singh in Srinagar
The Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday reiterated its pledge to disband the Jammu and Kashmir police's anti-terrorist Special Operations Group.
Talking to rediff.com in Srinagar, just hours before her father and PDP chief, Mufti Mohammad Syed, left for Delhi to discuss a power-sharing arrangement with the Congress, Mehbooba Mufti said her party stood committed to the people of the state to disband the SOG.
"The SOG has committed untold atrocities on the people. To disband SOG would be our first task after assuming office," she said.
She said her party would also seek to disarm surrendered militants, known as ikhwanis in the local lingo.
The surrendered militants, who worked as informants to the police, were allowed to keep arms for self-protection.
However, locals allege that the ikhwanis used their proximity to the security forces to run extortion rackets.
Mehbooba said her party would also work to get Prevention of Terrorism Act repealed. "The militants who do not have any serious cases against them would be freed," she said.
