Nine independent MLAs on Friday joined the Mufti Mohammed Sayeed-led Peoples' Democratic Party, television channel Aaj Tak reported.
The report, if confirmed, would push the PDP's tally to 23, three more than the Congress party and five less than the National Conference. The nine MLAs were not identified in the TV channel's report.
But PDP general secretary Tariq Hamid Karra said, "Nobody has officially joined the party so far."
The PDP and the Congress with 36 MLAs are eight short of the magic figure of 44 to form government in the state.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Ghulam Nabi Azad, claimed that six independent MLAs have joined it and expected 10 more to join the party by Saturday.
The developments come close on the heels of the hectic confabulations between the two parties for cobbling up a coalition government.
