Results are a vote against Centre: Hurriyat

Election 2002

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference on Thursday described the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election results as a 'vote against the central government'.

"This is a vote against the Indian government because these parties [who are emerging victorious] to some extent have been speaking about aspirations of the people of Kashmir, advocated talks between India and Pakistan and release of separatists," the outfit's chairman Abdul Gani Bhat said.

He hoped the parties emerging victorious would 'live up to their promises' made during electioneering.

But he said the election would not be of great help unless the 'basic issue' was addressed.

"What had to happen has happened. The National Conference has lost and the BJP has been wiped out," he said.
