K P S Gill, former director general of Punjab police, on Saturday criticised new Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for adopting a soft stand towards militants.
Speaking to rediff.com in New Delhi, Gill said that no government can afford to soft-pedal militancy particularly when foreign terrorists are lurking around and operating in Kashmir.
"I would not say the attacks that took place in Srinagar on Saturday were pre-planned, but they definitely show the presence of the terrorists in the capital of Jammu and Kashmir," Gill said. "This is bound to happen if you go populist and talk of measures like releasing the militants to please a particular section of the society."
A K Suri, director general of the state police, said the incidents have come as a sort of warning signal.
"We have lost three men in action on Saturday. While two personal security officers of Congress leader Sikandar Khan lost their lives while protecting Khan in Batmaloo in Srinagar, the third, a head constable, was shot dead at Lal Chowk," Suri said.
Terrorists groups operating in Kashmir have been lying low ever since the results of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections were announced on October 10. But the sudden spurt of violence in the state has sent shock waves amongst the Congress and the People's Democratic Party.
