Jaya to be sworn in as Tamil Nadu chief minister on Saturday

Election 2002

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

J Jayalalithaa, chief of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, will be sworn in as Tamil Nadu chief minister on Saturday.

This follows Governor P S Ramamohan Rao's formal invitation extended to her, after incumbent O Panneerselvam submitted his resignation.

The governor extended the invitation after returning officer S Pulamaadan issued the certificate of election to Jayalalithaa following her sweeping victory in the Andipatti assembly by-election.

The swearing-in function will take place at the Madras University Centenary Auditorium, at 10.50 am.

Indications are that the ruling AIADMK would make it a show of strength.

With the Supreme Court barring non-legislators from holding ministerial office twice during the life of the same legislature, Jayalalithaa's election from Andipatti and the formal receipt of her election certificate became necessary for the governor to invite her formally.
