Congress shines in by-polls too

Election 2002

The Congress, which achieved resounding successes in Punjab and Uttaranchal assembly polls, on Sunday also took the honours in by-polls to six Lok Sabha and seven assembly constituencies, winning seven of them.

The party, however, tasted defeat in Karnataka, where former prime minister H D Deve Gowda wrested the Kanakapura parliamentary seat from it.

Samajwadi Party retained the state's prestigious Mirzapur Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant following the assassination of bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi.

All India Anna DMK chief J Jayalalithaa won the Andipatti assembly seat in Tamil Nadu by a margin of 41,200 votes.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendera Modi romped home in Rajkot-II assembly seat, but his Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a setback losing two of the three assembly by-polls in the state to the Congress.

The most remarkable victory of the Congress in the by-elections was that of Jyotiraditya Scindia, son of late Madhavrao Scindia, from Guna-Shivpuri parliamentary constituency. He defeated his nearest rival Deshraj Singh Yadav of the BJP by a record margin of over 400,000 votes.

Congress retained its hold on Kaliabor Lok Sabha constituency in Assam when Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's younger brother Deep Gogoi won the seat by 168,140 votes.
