The victory margin of 41,201 votes established by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary J Jayalalithaa in the just concluded by-election to Andipatti, is her all-time best.
Jayalalithaa's victory from Bargur in the 1991 General Elections when she defeated actor-director T Rajender by a margin of 37,215 votes, had so far been her highest margin.
Jayalalithaa, however, could not break the highest margin of 42,267 votes recorded in Andipatti by her party candidate K Thavasi in the 1991 elections defeating DMK candidate P Asaiyan.
The 78,437 votes secured by Jayalalithaa in the bypoll was more than the 60,510 votes secured by her political mentor M G Ramachandran in the 1984 elections.
MGR, who had fought the election, while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the US, won by a margin of 32,484.
While Jayalalithaa polled 58.22 per cent of the total 1,34,703 votes polled, DMK candidate secured 27.67 per cent.
All the other 22 candidates, including MDMK nominee V Jayachandran and Puthiya Tamizhagam founder president Dr K Krishnaswamy forfeited their deposits.
