Unidentified terrorists on Thursday opened fire on three polling stations in Rajouri and Poonch districts, marring the by-election to the Jammu Lok Sabha constituency, official sources said, adding that there was no loss of life.
The terrorists opened fire from a distance on two polling stations at Dudaj and Topa in Thanamandi Tehsil of Rajouri at around 1100 am (IST), the sources said. The terrorists fled after the security forces retaliated, they said.
The polling, which was stopped for some time in these polling stations, resumed later, they added.
The security forces have launched an operation in the area to track down the terrorists.
A group of terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on a polling station at Fagla in Surankote area of Poonch district disrupting polling for half an hour, state Chief Electoral Officer Pramod Jain said.
Police and security forces returned the fire, forcing them to flee, he said. There was no loss of life in the incident.
Polling in other areas of the constituency was progressing smoothly, he said.
