SP workers open fire at Joshi's meeting

Samajwadi Party workers on Thursday stormed an election meeting of Union Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi, fired in the air and clashed with Bharatiya Janata Party activists in Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh, a senior police official said.

The minister escaped unhurt, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) A K Mitra said in Lucknow.

The SP workers, led by party candidate for Mishrik seat Om Prakash Gupta, opened fire and indulged in brick-batting at the meeting venue to scare away the crowd, he said.

The BJP workers retaliated and in the ensuing clash a few people suffered minor injuries, Mitra said.

A report in this connection has been lodged with the police, he added.
