Former Gujarat chief minister Amarsinh Choudhary was unanimously elected leader of opposition in the state assembly at a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party in Gandhinagar on Thursday.
Party president Sonia Gandhi approved Chaudhary's name, which was conveyed by All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of Gujarat Kamal Nath to AICC observer Kumari Shailja.
Shailja said the party would play a "constructive" role as the main opposition in the state assembly.
Asked whether any other name was proposed for the post, she said, "Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee chief Shankersinh Vaghela had hinted at Bharat Solanki, but the meeting unanimously decided on Choudhary's name."
Earlier, Choudhary's name was proposed by Bharat Solanki, MLA from Borsad assembly constituency of Anand district.
