Gujarati minorities vote in large numbers

December 13, 2002 02:43 IST

Voters from the minority community on Tuesday came out in large numbers to exercise their franchise in Gujarat.

The turnout was impressive in the riot-hit districts of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Mehsana and Panchmahals, which includes Godhra.

In Godhra, nearly 90 per cent of the 40,000 voters belonging to the minority community cast their ballot, according to state election commission sources.

A long queue was seen at Dariakhan Ghumat in the city, which recently sheltered victims of the riot.

Shahpur, Kalupur, Mirzapur, Naroda and other parts of the walled city of Ahmedabad, which bore the brunt of the communal violence, saw heavy polling with some areas witnessing more than 70 per cent turnout.

Election officials said the turnout of female voters of the minority community was almost equal to that of the males.
