Exit polls predict simple majority for BJP

December 12, 2002 18:59 IST

According to two exit polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party is heading for a simple majority in Gujarat.

Aaj Tak predicted around 93-109 seats for the BJP. The Congress, it said, would get between 72 and 88 seats in the 182-member House.

The Zee News-Taleem exit poll gave the BJP and Congress 101 and 69 seats respectively. The independents, it said, are likely to win 11 constituencies.

The poll, which covered more than 9,000 voters across 31 constituencies, predicted that the BJP would get 57 per cent of the vote share against 34 per cent for the Congress.

Even region-wise, the BJP is predicted to be well ahead of the Congress.

In north Gujarat, while the BJP is expected to get 54 per cent of the vote share, the Congress is expected to get 37 per cent, the poll suggested.

It gave 48 per cent of the vote share to the BJP in Saurashtra against 40 per cent for the Congress.

In central Gujarat, the BJP may get 60 per cent votes while the Congress is expected to bag 34 per cent votes.

The BJP is predicted to get 50 per cent of the votes in south Gujarat against 24 per cent to the Congress.
