One killed, six injured in firing and blasts in Baramulla

At least one person was killed and six others injured in several incidents of firing and bomb blasts, even as four per cent voting was recorded during the first two hours of polling in the border constituency of Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir today.

An official spokesman said about 11 per cent electors cast their vote in the Karnah assembly segment followed by Uri (nine per cent), Gurez (four per cent) and Handwara (three per cent).

He said reports from other assembly segments said that polling had started picking up after a dull start.

However, a UNI correspondent after visiting a number of polling booths in down town Baramulla assembly segment. saw only five voters had turned up out of 649 in one booth and in another booth, out of 850 only seven voters had cast their vote in the first two hours.

Official sources said security forces resorted to firing to disperse stone pelting demonstrators at Hygam and Sopore at around 1030 hours.

Sources said one person identified as Altaf Hussain Mir was killed in the firing.

Official sources said militants hurled a hand grenade towards a polling booth at Gund Qasim in Baramulla during the polling. One person was injured as the grenade exploded at a distance.

He said militants also attacked security forces near a polling booth at Takya in Bandipora this morning. Forces retaliated and the exchange continued for about half an hour. However, no one was injured, he said.

Sources said militants and security forces exchanged fire at Nowpora, Hailjagir, Saloosa and Haipoora last evening. But there were no reports of any casulities.

Unconfirmed reports said a blast took place near the house of a minister late last night at Handwara, causing damage to window panes of his kitchen. No one was injured in the blast, sources said.

Sources said three polling booths set up at Wangam in Bandipora were shifted to another building after two powerful improvised devices were found planted by militants this morning.
