Congress goes back on coalition mantra

The Congress today made it clear that it did not favour a coalition government and claimed that it would form a government on its own at the Centre.

Talking to newspersons, party spokesperson Kapil Sibal said party president Sonia Gandhi was quoted out of context on this issue. Gandhi, he said, had only stated that the Congress would consider what it would do in case it did not secure a majority. This was interpreted by newspersons to mean that she was not averse to forming a coalition government.

Sibal said there are several options before the party in case it did not secure a majority on its own which it need not spell out at the moment. The possibilities include the party opting to sit in the Opposition or form a minority government, he said.
