CWC begins introspective meeting

The Congress Working Committee began a two-day session this evening to discuss the latest political situation in the country and the causes for the party's debacle in the just-concluded Lok Sabha election.

According to party spokesman Ajit Jogi, the discussions are part of the in-depth analysis the party has undertaken to pinpoint the reasons for its setback and take corrective action.

According to some Congress sources, there was a brief mention about reports that the Central Bureau of Investigation had filed a chargesheet in the Bofors case. But there was no discussion as many felt it was not worth discussing.

Earlier in the day, another spokesman, Kapil Sibal, said the chargesheet was the result of a thirteen-year-long "political and legal joke". He said the party would react on Monday after studying the chargesheet in full.

Most members of the CWC took part in today's meeting, presided over by party president Sonia Gandhi.

The A K Antony committee, appointed by Gandhi to find out the reasons for the party's poor performance in the election, will convene in New Delhi on October 24 and file its report by November 30 after collecting evidence from various quarters and visiting different states.
