We will respect the public mandate, says Digvijay SinghThe Congress will play its role in the new Lok Sabha in accordance with the public mandate, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijay Singh said today. He was replying to a question whether the Congress would sit in the Opposition in the light of the fractured mandate thrown up by the just-concluded Lok Sabha election. ''We will honour the people's verdict,'' he told UNI at Bairagrah airport before leaving for New Delhi. He was accompanied by former Union minister Kamal Nath. Asked about the poor performance of the Congress in Madhya Pradesh, Singh said the results should be viewed in a national perspective and not in isolation. Denying that there was any erosion in the Congress' popularity in the state, he said his party's vote share had increased by more than four per cent as compared to the last Lok Sabha election. In the three assembly by-elections held along with the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress not only retained all the seats, but also increased its margins, he added. UNI
