BJP inching towards majority

After having established an early lead by winning two seats of Jaipur and Ajmer in Rajasthan, the BJP is now leading in five constituencies, while the Congress is ahead in eight.

Contrary to expectations, the Congress seems to be surging ahead in Karnataka. It may also improve its tally in Madhya Pradesh if the present leads are any indication.

The BJP-Telugu Desam Party may sweep the LS and assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh.

Sitting member Suresh Kurup of the Communist Party of India-Marxist defeated P C Chacko of the Congress by over 10,000 votes in a multicorned contest.

Purno A Sangma of the National Congress Party was declared elected from the Tura constituency in Meghalaya. He defeated his nearest Congress rival Atul C Marak by 113,579 votes.

Sangma has snatched the seat from the Congress, polling 1,82,883 votes.

Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda has been defeated by G Putteswamy Gowda of the Congress in Hassan.

National Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Commission Chairman Dalip Singh Bhuria, who is contesting for the Jhabua (ST) seat in Orissa as a BJP candidate, is trailing behind former minister Kantilal Bhuria of the Congress by a margin of about 35,000 votes.

MP Chief Minister Digvijay Singh's younger brother Laxman Singh is ahead of television artist Nitish Bharadwaj of the BJP by a margin of about 12,000 votes.

Praneet Kaur of the Congress defeated Surjit Singh Rakhra of the SAD-B by over 70,000 votes in a multi-cornered contest in Patiala. The Congress gains this seat.

Omar Abdullah of the National Conference is leading by 15,828 votes over his nearest rival, Mehbooba Mufti (Independent), after counting was completed in six assembly segments of Srinagar.

In Karimnagar, Andhra Pradesh, Ch Vidyasagar Rao (BJP) is leading by over 10,000 votes.

In Uluberia, Hannan Mollah of the CPI-M was leading by 2,828 votes over his nearest rival, Dr Sudipta Roy of the Trinamul Congress.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi is leading by 34,000 votes over Sushma Swaraj of the BJP in the Bellary constituency after the counting of 300,000 votes.

In Ladakh, Congress candidate Thupstan Chhewang was leading by 3,301 votes over Hassan Khan (NC) after the first round.

In Jammu, Vaid Vishnu Dutt (BJP) was leading over his nearest NC rival, R S Chib by a margin of over 25,000 votes in the first round of counting.

In Baramulla, A R Shaheen (NC) was leading by 950 votes over his nearest rival, Muzaffar Baig (Independent) after counting was completed in three assembly segments.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has won the Lucknow seat by a massive margin.

Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani has won the Gandhinagar seat.

Former Union finance minister Manmohan Singh has lost the Delhi South seat by over 30,000 votes.

Vijay Goel, Anita Arya and Jagmohan (all BJP) have been declared elected from Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh and Delhi seats respectively.

The lose of Karol Bagh is a major setback for the Congress as it had won only that seat in the 1998 Lok Sabha election.

The BJP has also won the Panaji, Ahmedabad and Coimbatore seats. The party has also won both the Goa seats.

The Congress has bagged the Ernakulam seat.

Sudip Bandopadhayay of the Trinamul Congress defeated Siddhartha Shankar Roy of the Congress by 94,200 votes in a triangular contest in Calcutta North West. The party retains the seat.

The Trinamul Congress has also bagged the Shampur seat.

Pushp Jain of the BJP defeated sitting Congress candidate Meetha Lal Jian in Nagaur by a margin of 146,066 votes.

In Rajnandgaon in MP, former chief minister Motilal Vora of the Congress was trailing by 20,000 votes behind Dr Raman of the BJP.

In Chhindwara, MP, former Union minister Kamal Nath of the Congress was leading by 80,000 votes over his nearest rival, Santosh Jain of the BJP. Former chief minister Shyama Charan Shukla of the Congress was leading by 5,000 votes over nearest rival Chandra Shekhar Sahu of the BJP.

In Bhubaneswar, Orissa, Prasanna Kumar Patsani of the BJD defeated Bibhuti Bhusan Singh Mardaraj of the Congress by 232,526 votes in a multi-cornered contest. The BJD retains the Lok Sabha seat.

In Jagatsinghpur, also in Orissa, Trilochan Kanungo of the BJD was leading by 669 votes over his nearest rival Ranjib Biswal of the Congress.

In Kapadwanj, Gujarat, former chief minister Shankarsinh Vaghela of the Congress was leading by 2,250 votes over his nearest rival Jaisinh Chauhan of the BJP.

IUML national president G M Banatwala was leading by 58,081 votes over his nearest rival P P Suneer (CPI-LDF) in Ponnani, Kerala.

In Secunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Union Minister of State for Urban Development Bandaru Dattatreya of the BJP has defeated his nearest rival Nadendla Bhaskara Rao of the Congress.

In Phulbani, Orissa, Padmanav Behera of the Biju Janata Dal was leading by 4,800 votes over his nearest rival Mrutyunjaya Nayak of the Congress.

In Dhenkanal, Orissa, K P Singdeo of the Congress is leading by 6,000 votes over his nearest rival Tathagat Satpathy of the BJD.

In Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, Maheshwar Singh of the BJP was leading by 115,000 votes over his nearest rival Kaul Singh of the Congress.

In Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, Shanta Kumar of the BJP led by 100,000 votes over his nearest rival Sat Mahajan of the Congress.

In Varanasi, Shankar Prasad Jaiswal of the BJP leads his nearest rival Rajesh Mishra of the Congress by 3,000 votes after the completion of the first round.

Former Bajrang Dal president Jaibhan Singh Pavaiya of the BJP defeated Chandramohan Nagori of the Congress by 83,116 votes in a multicornered contest in Gwalior.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader and former Union minister Murasoli Maran won the Madras Central seat, defeating his nearest rival, INL leader M A Latheef.

In Hajipur, Bihar, Janata Dal (United) candidate Ramvilas Paswan is leading over Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate Ramai Ram by 15,000 votes in Hajipur constituency.

In Lakhimpur, Assam, Asom Gana Parishad candidate Sarbananda Sonowal is leading over his nearest Congress Candidate, Ranee Narah, by over 1,200 votes.

Dr Subramanian Swamy (Janata Party), sitting member, has been trounced in the Madurai Lok Sabha constituency. He secured just 21,000 votes.

In Bangalore North, former Union minister C K Jaffer Sharief is leading by 13,599 votes.

In Bombay South Central, Mohan Rawle of the Shiv Sena leads by 15,143 votes over Majid Memon of the Samajwadi Party at the end of the fifth round of counting.

Murli Deora of the Congress has lost to Jaywantiben Mehta (BJP) in Bombay South.

Jayaben Thakkar of the BJP was leading by 900 votes over her nearest rival Urmilaben Patel of the Congress.

V S Sivakumar (Congress) has defeated his nearest Communist Party of India rival Kaniyapuram Ramachandran in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency.

Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen's Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi has defeated Baddam Bal Reddy of the BJP in Hyderabad.

In Chandigarh, Krishan Lal Sharma of the BJP has lost to his nearest rival Pawan Kumar Bansal of the Congress.

In Tripura East (reserved), Bajuban Reang of the CPI-M was leading by 4,000 votes over his nearest rival Jishnu Debbarma of the BJP.

In Calcutta South, Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamul Congress has defeated her nearest rival Suvankar Chakravarty of the CPI-M.

In Bhopal, Union Minister Uma Bharti of the BJP has defeated her nearest rival Suresh Pachouri of the Congress.

Congress candidate M O H Farooq is leading by 9,792 votes over his nearest Pattali Makkal Katchi rival M Ramdoss in the lone Lok Sabha seat in Pondicherry.

In the Bombay North East parliamentary constituency, Gurudas Kamat of the Congress is leading by over 2,868 votes after the first round of counting.

In Karnal, Bhajan Lal of the Congress has lost to his nearest rival I D Swami of the BJP.

Reoti Raman Singh (Samajwadi Party) is ahead of his nearest rival Dr M M Joshi (BJP) by 369 votes.

The DMK has won two of the three Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu. Madurai went to the Communist Party of India-Marxist, supported by the All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Vinod Khanna of the BJP has won the Gurudaspur seat in Punjab.
