Ajit Kumar Saha managed to break the Congress hold over this seat in 1971 and held on this seat for the CPI-M for four consecutive terms. Sukhendu Khan did likewise in the next two elections. In 1996, Sandhya Bauri did likewise, defeating the Congress's Ashis Rajak by 366,000 votes.
