After the RSP won this seat in the first election, Asoke Sen, the former law minister, retained this seat for the Congress till 1984 barring, of course, 1977. In 1989 giant-killer Debi Prosad Pal defeated Sen after the latter had moved on to the JD, and the seat has remained safely in the Congress's hands. In 1996 Pal defeated the JD's Shyamal Bhattacharjee by 65,000 votes. Interestingly, Amal Dutta (BJP) managed to corner 13.50 % of the vote. Guuess who won this seat in 1952? The legendary scientist Meghnad Saha!
