V P Singh's elder brother Sant Bux Singh first won this seat for the Congress in 1967, and encored in 1971. He was defeated by the BLD in 1977, and in 1980 and 1984 Hari Krishna Shastri won it back for the Congress. V P Singh, now with the JD and the prime minister-in-waiting, won the seat for the JD in 1989, and retained it in 1991 as well. In 1996, the BSP's Vishambhar Pratap Nishad defeated the BJP's Mahendra Pratap Narayan Singh by 24,000 votes.
