A Congress stronghold which has gone in for the BLD/JD just a couple of times, what was surprising about the 1996 outcome was not that it remained with the Congress, but that it was the BJP and not the JD that came second. Tarachand Bhagora won the seat by 51,000 votes, but the BJP was ahead of the Janata Dal by 84,000 votes. H
