Mohan Kumaramangalam, Rangarajan Kumaramangalam's father, was the MP from here in 1971, on the Congress ticket. The Congress, which had won the previous two elections held here, lost the 1977 election to the AIADMK, but has won all the five elections held since. M O H Farook has been elected from here in the last two elections, and in 1996 he defeated the DMK's S Arumugam by 284 votes.
