The first election was held in 1977, and the winner was the Congress's Purno Agitok Sangma who went on to win in 1980 and 1984 as well. He did not contest the 1989 election which his party won anyway, and has retained the seat in 1991 and 1996, when he was elected Speaker of the 11th Lok Sabha. His winning margin in 1996: 185,000 votes.
