The country's largest constituency in terms of population. Before 1989 it alternated between the Left and the Congress. Ram Jethmalani contested as an Independent in 1971 and lost to the Congress. In 1996 this seat reverted to the Shiv Sena, which defeated the Congress by almost 200,000 votes.
